Flow Meter Calibrators: Bench Loop Standards for Metrology Certification

Quick Answer: A bench loop flow calibrator is a stationary reference standard that verifies flow meter accuracy under controlled lab conditions. It pumps a stable fluid through the meter under test and a master meter or gravimetric system. The result is an ISO 17025 traceable calibration certificate with uncertainty down to ±0.05%, which oil and gas auditors, water utility engineers, and pharmaceutical QA teams demand before signing off a batch.

Silver Automation Instruments runs multiple bench loop rigs at our Nanjing facility. Each rig uses three parallel master meters Coriolis, electromagnetic, and positive displacement to cover liquid flows from 0.1 kg/h to 120,000 kg/h. We do not outsource the calibration step. This keeps lead time short and gives us direct control over the uncertainty budget that appears on your sensor tag.

Why a bench loop, not a field check

Field checks with a handheld calibrator or a clamp on ultrasonic meter tell you if the meter is drifting. They do not give you an uncertainty value that a metrology body accepts. A bench loop operates in a temperature controlled room at 20 °C ± 0.5 °C, with degassed water or a low vapor pressure oil as the calibration fluid. Back pressure is held at a fixed 2 bar to suppress cavitation. The master meter assembly is re certified every 12 months against a gravimetric scale that is itself linked to the national standard at NIM China or NIST. When a water authority in Surabaya asked for a calibration chain diagram for their billing meters, we sent the full traceability tree from NIM to the bench loop to their DN150 electromagnetic meter serial number in one PDF. The auditor cleared the installation in two days.

What gets calibrated on the bench

We calibrate the full flow curve, not just one point. A typical job for a DN25 Coriolis meter with a nominal range of 0 to 2,400 kg/h runs 10 flow points 2,400, 1,800, 1,200, 600, 300, 120, 60, 30, 6, and 0.6 kg/h. Each point stabilizes for 90 seconds and collects 60 seconds of pulse and 4-20 mA HART data. The K factor at each point is stored in the meter memory. We ship the meter with the calibration certificate, the raw data sheet, and the uncertainty calculation per ISO 17025:2017 section 7.6. A dairy plant in Guatemala recently needed a 3.1 material certificate on the wetted parts plus the flow calibration. We combined both documents in a single release pack because the bench loop technician and the QC inspector sit on the same floor.

Metrology certification that holds up in court

Custody transfer measurements in the Middle East and West Africa often end up in arbitration if the fiscal meter shows a 0.3% deviation from the shore tank gauging. Bench loop calibration data becomes legal evidence. That is why we state the measurement uncertainty directly on the calibration certificate with the coverage factor k=2. For a 6 inch turbine meter used on crude oil loading at a terminal in Basra, the uncertainty came back at ±0.12% of reading. The terminal operator and the buyer both accepted it because the bench loop master meter had a valid NIM calibration and the uncertainty budget included ambient temperature drift during the test.

We also handle thermal mass meter calibration for biogas and flare gas applications. The bench loop for gas uses compressed air as the working medium, referenced to a bank of sonic nozzles. A food waste biogas plant in Johor, Malaysia received three thermal mass meters from us in 2024. Each meter came with a 10 point air calibration from 0.5 to 50 Nm/s and a composition correction factor for 65% CH4, 35% CO2. The plant manager later ordered two more meters for the expanded digester because the first set passed the local DOSH inspection without any zero shift.
