Ml/Min Flow Meter Selection & Low Flow Calibration Guide
Quick Answer
For measuring flow rates from 0.1 ml/min to 1000 ml/min you need a meter with high turndown ratio and no moving parts that can clog. A micro Coriolis mass flow meter is the first choice because it measures mass directly and ignores bubbles or viscosity changes. Thermal mass flow meters work well for clean gases and low liquid flows under 50 ml/min. Oval gear meters are a cost effective option for diesel or oil in the 10 to 1000 ml/min range if you can handle periodic cleaning. Send us your fluid name, viscosity in cP, pressure in bar, temperature in °C, and min/normal/max flow in ml/min. We will return a calibrated meter quote within 24 hours.
Why a ml/min Flow Meter Is Different
Standard industrial flow meters for DN15 pipes and above struggle below 2 L/min. At 5 ml/min the velocity through a DN10 pipe is so low that magmeter electrodes see noise instead of flow. Ultrasonic transit time signals get lost. Turbine meters stall. The only reliable choices are meters that either read mass directly or trap and displace tiny fluid volumes.
Most engineers skip this part but the Reynolds number in a 4 mm tube at 10 ml/min of water is around 50. Fully laminar. This means any meter that depends on a velocity profile vortex, ultrasonic, differential pressure will drift with temperature and viscosity. Because of this, mass flow meters and positive displacement meters dominate the ml/min space.
Meter Types That Actually Work Below 1000 ml/min
Micro Coriolis Mass Flow Meters
Silver Instruments supplies micro Coriolis meters that measure down to 0.1 ml/min for liquids and 0.5 ml/min for gases. The sensor tube diameter is 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm. Common tube materials are 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy C22, or titanium for aggressive chemicals. The output is 4-20 mA HART with mass flow, density, and temperature all on one loop. In practice we see a paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia using a 0.5 mm tube Coriolis meter to dose 2 ml/min of a solvent based dye with viscosity 120 cP. The meter holds ±0.2% of rate even after the pump pulsation dampener fails. One note the small tubes can block with particles. Always install a 10 micron filter upstream.
Thermal Mass Flow Meters
For clean liquids and gases below 50 ml/min a thermal mass flow meter is often simpler. Silver Instruments thermal meters use a PT100 sensor pair and a bypass capillary. The wetted parts are 316L or quartz coated for ultrapure water. A customer in Melbourne uses a thermal meter to measure 0.5 to 5 ml/min of argon into a glovebox. Response time is under 0.3 seconds. The downside is that thermal meters need the specific heat capacity of the fluid to stay constant. If your gas mix changes from pure argon to argon with 5% hydrogen, the reading will drift. But if the fluid is fixed, the thermal meter gives you direct mass flow without density compensation.
Oval Gear Flow Meters for Diesel and Oils
In the 10 to 1000 ml/min range an oval gear meter with 0.05 ml/pulse resolution works well for fuel consumption measurement. We ship many oval gear meters to Indonesia and Nigeria for generator diesel monitoring. The oval gears are PPS plastic or aluminum with PTFE seals. The meter pulses 500 to 1000 pulses per litre. At 10 ml/min you get a pulse every 0.6 seconds. Most customers connect this to a Silver paperless recorder or a PLC input. The weak point is dirt. If your diesel has rust particles the gears lock up. A 50 micron Y strainer is mandatory.
Low Flow Calibration Guide
Calibrating a meter below 100 ml/min requires a gravimetric method. A peristaltic pump pulls fluid from a beaker on a precision balance with 0.001 g resolution. The timer starts when the beaker weight begins to drop and stops after 30 g of flu

We have seen on customer sites many times that field zeroing is done wrong. If you install a Coriolis meter in a vertical pipe and leave a small air bubble, the zero will shift by 0.5 ml/min sometimes more. Always fill the meter completely and close the downstream isolation valve for 60 seconds during zero. For thermal meters, zero with no flow for 2 minutes until the output is stable within 0.05% of span.
How to Select the Right Meter
First check if the fluid is conductive. For water based fluids above 5 µS/cm a miniature electromagnetic flow meter is possible but only above 20 ml/min. Below that, go Coriolis. Next, check viscosity. If viscosity is above 50 cP an oval gear meter will leak less than a Coriolis meter with a tiny tube but only if no particles are present. Third, check gas or liquid. For gas below 5 ml/min the only solid option is thermal mass flow. For gas above 50 ml/min we often use a micro Coriolis with gas calibrations on argon, CO2, or natural gas. Finally, check the pressure. Our standard meters go to 100 bar on the micro Coriolis and 40 bar on the oval gear. ATEX Zone 1 certification is available for the Coriolis and thermal models. We supply ATEX certified meters to a chemical plant in Saudi Arabia for solvent dosing at 0.5 to 10 ml/min.
Installation Tips That Prevent Calibration Drift
Small tube meters oscillate at high frequency 400 to 800 Hz on a micro Coriolis. Any pipe stress misaligns the sensor and the zero shifts. Use flexible hoses on both sides or a stiff mounting plate with minimum 100 mm straight run before and after the meter. Most engineers forget that a pulsating pump at low flow creates backflow during the pump stroke. A diaphragm pump at 10 ml/min can cause 20% reverse flow. Install a pulse dampener and a check valve right at the meter inlet. For diesel oval gear meters, a vertical installation with flow upward pushes air bubbles out. A horizontal mounting traps air and gives intermittent readings.
FAQ
Which meter works for 0.5 ml/min of perfume oil? A micro Coriolis with 0.5 mm tube and 316L stainless steel. The density function also checks product quality. Silver Instruments supplies this exact meter to a fragrance manufacturer in France.
Can a thermal mass flow meter measure 2 ml/min of diesel? No. Thermal meters need clean, single phase fluids. Diesel contains additives and can leave film on the sensor. Use an oval gear meter with PPS gears for diesel down to 10 ml/min.
How often should I recalibrate an oval gear meter for generator fuel? Every 6 months if the fuel is filtered. If the strainer clogs often, check the meter pulse per litre every month. We provide a simple field check kit with a 500 ml graduated cylinder.
Do I need an ATEX meter for methanol dosing at 5 ml/min? Yes if Zone 1. Silver Instruments micro Coriolis meters come with ATEX and IECEx for II 2G Ex ib IIC T6 Gb. Specify ATEX when you send the quote request.
What is the price of a ml/min flow meter? Micro Coriolis meters start around AUD 3800 for OEM versions without a display. Thermal mass meters for gas start at AUD 1200. Oval gear meters for diesel start at AUD 480. Send us your full flow range and fluid details for an exact price.
