1. Regarding the margin collapse phenomenon in CSS
The margin collapse phenomenon in CSS refers to the phenomenon in standard document flow where the margin values of vertically adjacent elements are not added together, but the larger value is taken as the final spacing, resulting in layout performance that does not match expectations. This phenomenon only occurs in the vertical direction and does not occur in the horizontal direction.
One typical scenario of margin collapse is the collapse between sibling elements. When two vertically arranged block level elements (such as div) are adjacent, their upper and lower margins overlap, and the final spacing is the larger margin value between the two.
. Example:< div style="margin-bottom: 30px;">Box1 Box2
The actual spacing is 30px (whichever is larger), instead of the expected 50px. When the parent element does not have a border or inner margin set, the child elements margin top will penetrate the parent element and create spacing with external elements of the parent element; The margin bottom of a child element penetrates the parent element and creates a gap with subsequent elements. Example:< div style="background: lightgray;">
Child Box
The margin top of a child element will result in a 30px distance between the top of the parent element and the external element, rather than starting from the inside of the parent element.
2. Causes of Collapse: CSS specification design: Vertical margin overlap is the default behavior of CSS, aimed at simplifying the calculation of spacing between adjacent elements and avoiding layout confusion caused by repeated spacing.
. BFC (block level formatting context) missing: Elements that have not formed independent BFCs will participate in the layout calculation of parent elements, resulting in margin penetration.
III. Solution 1 The solution to the collapse of sibling elements is to uniformly adjust the margin of individual elements: add a margin bottom to the upper element or a margin top to the lower element, ensuring that the spacing is controlled by a single direction. Example:< div style="margin-bottom: 30px;">Box1
Use Flexbox or Grid layout: These layout models automatically handle spacing to avoid margin collapse. Example:< div style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; gap: 10px;">
